ujjwal kanishka utkarsh primarily makes films and for over the past decade and a half has been developing a cinematic form which emerges from the observational cinema tradition. With and through such a form, he has engaged with themes of labour, agricultural practices, ideas of nothingness. For ujjwal, this implies working towards a political form which is experiential-sensorial and spiritual in nature. In his more recent works he has been working with the challenge of looking at direct social and political activity through such an approach. He has continued his practice as PhD-in-Practice candidate at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna and now as the Principal Investigator of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF)’s Artistic Research (PEEK) funded project ‘Commemorating a Revolution yet to come’. He often works collaboratively with other artists and art forms including but not limited to theatre, dance, photography, contemporary art exhibition, and textual practices. He has also been very keen on expanding his practice to textual and curatorial practice. As part of these efforts, he has co-founded and runs the artist-academic-activist platform ‘the observatory’.
